Dvorák: Piano Trios Op. 90 and Op. 65Wien Haydn Trio Ensemble

Dvorák's music is rich with folk music flavor and feeling, and his "Dumky" Trio is one of the richest. The Haydn Trio, Vienna performs the "Dumky" on this disc well, but with not quite enough passion for the listener to get the full effect of the folk rhythms and moods. The trio does give its phrasing shading and shape, and violinist Michael Schnitzler can be heard at times digging into the strings for a more dramatic sound, but overall it could be doing more with the music as it goes back and forth between deep lamentation and joyous dancing. The sound of the recording also isn't quite close enough to capture truly meaningful subtleties in the shadings. The very beginning of the Piano Trio No. 3 also seems to be more restrained than necessary, but pretty soon the Haydn Trio takes off with more liveliness and excitement than in the "Dumky." Schnitzler and cellist Walther Schulz play with particular smoothness in the upper registers in the Poco Adagio movement. It's a decent effort by an ensemble that began its career performing the more refined and graceful works of the Classical era. © Patsy Morita, All Music Guide
