One might have wished that DG had left off the Triple Concerto with Mutter, Ma, Zeltser, and Karajan: a soggy, soupy performance that does neither the work nor the artists' reputations any good. Anyone particularly hard-hearted might have wished that DG had used a different recording of the violin concerto than Mutter and Karajan's; as beautiful as it is—and it is very, very beautiful—it is still the work of a young violinist who may have been a bit too much under the spell of the older conductor. And while one might wish that DG had used a different recording of the violin concerto arranged by Beethoven as a piano concerto—Barenboim's performance is too coy and too cute to be believed—there really aren't any better recordings. But no one could wish for a better modern recording of the piano concertos than this one by Maurizio Pollini, Claudio Abbado, and the Vienna Philharmonic. Pollini is arguably the greatest living Beethoven pianist: the most virtuosic, the most intellectual, the most insightful, and often the most spiritual. Abbado is certainly the greatest living Beethoven conductor: the most skilled, the most inspired, the most inspiring. They are of one mind when it comes to interpretations: their First is brilliant, their Second is graceful, their Third is passionate, their Fourth is sublime, and their Fifth is the most exhilarating, the most astounding, and one of the most profound ever recorded and certainly the best recording by performers of Pollini and Abbado's generation. The Vienna Philharmonic is the world's greatest Beethoven orchestra—the warmest, the strongest, the tightest—and it performs here at the top of its powers. © James Leonard, All Music Guide
