This set of the chamber music of Robert Schumann by the Lions Gate Trio is a superlative collection with superb performances of wonderful repertoire recorded with astounding fidelity. Founded at Tanglewood and in residence at the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique in Paris, the Lions Gate Trio is a powerful, passionate, and, best of all, professional ensemble that delivers performances as compelling as the finest ever recorded. Its choice of music—Schumann's three piano trios plus four sets of his shorter works for violin, cello, and piano—contains not only core repertoire but also some repertoire infrequently programmed except as encores. Perhaps most impressive is the sound, which, because it was recorded at IRCAM's studios in Paris, is fully competitive with the best currently available. Anyone who loves chamber music, tremendous ensemble playing, or terrific recordings will enjoy these discs.
