Even though Charles Koechlin's music is pleasantly tuneful, harmonically lush, and mildly impressionistic in style, it has not yet found the wide audience it deserves. Listeners who love Fauré and adore Debussy will probably feel right at home with Koechlin's gentle, evocative chamber pieces, and regard this 2006 recording by cellist Peter Bruns and pianist Roglit Ishay as a delightful discovery of a long neglected body of work. The Chansons Bretonnes (20) for cello and piano, Op. 115 (1931-1932), reflect the composer's interest in setting French folk songs in decorous arrangements; and even when form requires a more complicated developmental approach, as in the Sonata for cello and piano, Op. 66 (1917), Koechlin's themes suggest the same popular influence. Because the emphasis is placed on sustained, vibrant melodies, one's attention will be drawn first of all to Bruns' smooth phrasing and tender, lyrical expression, which make these performances feel quite soulful; yet Ishay's subtle accompaniment, though often very soft and delicate, should not be ignored, for her restrained playing complements Bruns' rich tone and gives it adequate space to project clearly. Their performance of Debussy's Cello Sonata (1915) is equally balanced between intense melodic outpourings from the cello and controlled figurations in the piano part, though Debussy's music is a great deal more sophisticated than the Koechlin selections, and some may find it is too brilliant to be relegated to the end of the album as filler. Hänssler's sound is warm and resonant, with close-up microphone placement and lifelike presence. © Blair Sanderson, All Music Guide
