Album

Winter Kolednica, an album of carols (kolednice) from the Slovenian traditions, which are remarkably well-preserved given the centuries of possible influence from their neighbors. The works are primarily winter carols (from Christmas, New Years, the traditional pig slaughter, the Epiphany, and Candlemas), with a number of short instrumentals and spoken greetings and such interspersed here and there between the main tracks. All works are furnished by the Slovenian Academy's Institute of Ethnomusicology archives. The songs are relatively stately, performed in a slow and drawn-out manner intentionally. On the other side of the coin, the drawn-out manner can start to grate on the average listener after a time. Luckily, the instrumental tracks break up the song lines enough to create a diversion. The performances are more or less standard for carols, regardless of culture, but there is a little more reverence inherent in these ones than in their British counterparts perhaps. It's a relatively enjoyable listen, showing off some nice abilities on the part of the singers and moreover a wonderful peek into an otherwise unheard tradition, purely aesthetically, though it's probably best as background music during a quiet holiday gathering.
