This set includes one disc of excerpts from Naïve's 2003 recording of Orlando Furioso and one disc that offers samples of other operas and instrumental and sacred music from the Vivaldi Edition, all performed by Jean-Christophe Spinosi leading Ensemble Matheus and Choeur "Les Eléments," with a uniformly outstanding cast of vocal and instrumental soloists. Orlando Furioso offers ample evidence of Vivaldi's gifts as a composer of potent and often astonishing dramatic music, and the excerpts here are likely to leave the listener eager to hear the entire opera. Vivaldi's music offers singers the opportunity to create vivid and visceral characterizations, and the performances by Spinosi and his soloists, particularly counter tenor Philippe Jaroussky, contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux, mezzo-soprano Jennifer Larmore, and soprano Verónica Cangemi, are as dramatically charged as they are musically eloquent. Lemieux, as Orlando, in fact, gives Marilyn Horne a run for her money in tearing up the scenery in a role that was a specialty of Horne's. The second disc features excerpts from the operas Griselda and La verità in cimento, the Stabat Mater, and the Concerto for recorder in G minor. Soprano Simone Kermes' coloratura is nothing less than flabbergasting in two arias from Griselda. These samples are a transparent ploy to entice listeners to seek out the complete recordings, and it's completely successful, with performances as vital, elegant, and virtuosic as these.
