When it comes to Bach's Cantatas, you can depend on Masaaki Suzuki. In the previous 24 volumes of his recordings of Bach's Cantatas, Suzuki led the singers and instrumentalists of his Bach Collegium Japan in warmhearted and fully satisfying performances and Suzuki does it again in his 25th volume. As always, Suzuki's performances are thoroughly thought through and, as always, they are deeply emotional. The musicians of the Collegium perform superbly and, as always, the performance is supremely affecting.Indeed, if Suzuki's performances have a fault, it is that the performances can embody every human emotion, but they cannot transcend human emotion. For all the humanity of these performances, the listeners gets no sense of the superhuman, of the supernatural, in a work, of the sublime in Bach's Cantatas. As fully human as Suzuki and the Collegium's Bach is, it lacks the immanence of the numinous. And while one is deeply moved by these performances, one is not profoundly awed by them. BIS' sound embodies the imminence of the luminous.
