What is it that distinguishes the 34th volume in Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan's survey of the complete cantatas of J.S. Bach from all the other recordings of the three works included here? Is it the quality of the soloists? Yes. The four western soloists are excellent, particularly heartfelt soprano Carolyn Sampson in "Wie Schön Leuchtet der Morgenstern" and muscular bass Peter Kooij in "Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort." Is it the quality of the chorus? Yes. The small Japanese chorus joined by the western soloists is technically agile and interpretively earnest. Is it the quality of the orchestra? Yes. The almost entirely Japanese period-instrument chamber orchestra is brightly colorful and strongly rhythmic. Is it the quality of the leadership? Yes. Suzuki is a wonderfully musical and deeply soulful director and his interpretations are true to the letter, as well as to the spirit of Bach's sacred music. Is it the quality of the sound? Yes. BIS recorded on location in the chapel of the Kobe Shoin Women's University and the sound is absolutely transparent and wholly realistic. Whether you already have recordings of these three works by Koopman, Gardiner, Harnoncourt, Leonhardt, Richter, and Rilling or not, the 34th volume in BIS' cantata cycle will be satisfying listening. © James Leonard, All Music Guide
