Celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of both Frédéric Chopin and Robert Schumann in 2010, Marquis Records presents the G minor piano trios of both composers. Chopin's trio is from very early in his career and represents one of his few chamber music compositions. Though Chopin was known mostly for his piano compositions, his instrument of choice does not unduly dominate the score here. Schumann's trio, his third in the genre, is from late in the composer's life and, as such, has more of a feeling of maturity, confidence, and balance. Performing is the Manhattan Piano Trio, a young ensemble already making great strides to secure a successful career. The playing in both Schumann and Chopin stands out for one characteristic in particular: exceptional balance. The three musicians have a natural give and take, ensuring that listeners never miss a single note. Their sophisticated, insightful interpretations belie their young years; they bring a level of attention to detail, variety of tone colors, and clear understanding of the score that surpasses ensembles with many more years of experience. A delightful way to celebrate 200th birthdays. © Mike D. Brownell, Rovi
