In Philip Glass' first collaboration with Woody Allen, Cassandra's Dream reflects the film's dark tone. The movie, which shares the ominous themes of intrigue and deception of Allen's earlier film Match Point, also has a British setting. Glass' music is more threatening than usual, with a preponderance of throbbing unison lines in the lower strings, but in general, his scoring is very much like that of many of his other scores for cinematic dramas, particularly The Hours and Notes on a Scandal. He breaks no new ground here, but he provides a tightly coiled, harmonically charged accompaniment to the action onscreen. Michael Reisman brings an intimate and long-standing knowledge of Glass' style to his direction of an unnamed orchestra, which plays with passion and intensity. The CD is released on Glass' own Orange Mountain Music label, and the sound is clean and vivid. The fine performance and musical variety make this an album that Glass' fans can enjoy as a collection of brief, dramatic character pieces, apart from any knowledge of the film. © Stephen Eddins, All Music Guide
