Hard would be the heart, closed would be the mind, and dead would be the soul that could resist this disc of the Overtures of Carl Maria von Weber. Gustav Kuhn, while by no means one of the brightest stars among living conductors, is a deft conductor of German Romantic operas, and his enthusiasm and fondness for the virtues of Weber are obvious in every note. The Dresden Staatskapelle, on the other hand, is surely one of the most loved of German orchestras, and its playing here is polished, spirited, and wholly sympathetic. Together, Kuhn and the Staatskapelle turn in performances of extraordinary energy and endless charm, and while the best-known overtures—Euryanthe, Oberon, and, of course, Der Freischütz—have had splendid recordings before, the less-known overtures—Abu Hassan, Preciosa, Rübenzahle, and the Jubel-Ouvertüre—beat all the competition. Listeners looking for a single disc compilation of Weber's overtures need look no further. Capriccio's super-audio sound is deep, detailed, absolutely true to life, and easily the finest it has ever made. © James Leonard, All Music Guide
