Message from the Director of the Learning Center

David Barg

Greetings,

Joining my dear friend, Pierre, at The Classical Archives as the Learning Center Director is a great privilege, and pleasure. It provides a powerful opportunity to work with my colleagues to spread the joy and inspiration that music can provide to many, many more people via the internet.

The Archives’ dramatic growth through the years is a testament to its founder and to its talented contributors and faithful visitors. That growth also speaks to classical music’s enduring value, and I am excited to share with you some of our plans for making your classical music experience at the Archives even more rewarding.

We now introduce the "Live Performances." You can now hear some of the music you’ve enjoyed in MIDI format performed by outstanding orchestras, chamber groups, and individual soloists from around the world in streaming audio - performed on the instruments for which they were written! A very special section of the Live Performances feature will be our "Young Artists Division," which will feature truly inspiring performances by young artists who are already making a valuable contribution to classical music. You’ll also be able to read about each ensemble and artist on dedicated pages that will be similar to the new composers’ biography pages you may have noticed as you move around our site. We’ll continue to add those specially commissioned bios until you’ll be able to read about the lives of the most significant composers of both the past and the present.

Finding out more about the composers isn’t the only learning you’ll be able to find at The Classical Archives. Soon, you’ll be able to visit the Learning Center, where I’ll offer insights into the most popular classics in my "View from the Podium" -- what a conductor thinks about in leading various orchestral works. In addition, I’ll also discuss just what a conductor does - it’s really a lot more than waving our arms until the music stops, then turning around to bow! Music teachers and instrumentalists will also find valuable tips for improving their skills, and there will be articles for music lovers on a wide variety of topics. As Pierre said in his message to you, we’re looking forward to expanding the range of music we’ll bring to you at the Archives, and, eventually, to including other forms of artistic expression.

In closing, I’d like to share a memorable moment at the 75th birthday celebration for Leonard Bernstein at the Tanglewood Music Festival some years ago. One of the most illustrious artists who flew in for the occasion was the legendary Russian cellist, pianist, and conductor, Mstislav Rostropovich. He opened his tribute to "Lenny" by quoting Dostoevsky: "Beauty makes peace in the world." That concept has not only remained with me as a source of inspiration; it is also a strong and resonant element at The Classical Archives. The universal love of music is, indeed, a powerful force for helping us realize that what we have in common is far, far more than what separates us. I am grateful for this opportunity to bring more beauty to more people’s lives through my work at the Archives, and I look forward to your visits, your discoveries, and your delight.

With Every Best Wishes,

David A. Barg, Director Learning Center
