Joseph Calleja began studying voice when he was 16. Just three years later, he debuted professionally as Macduff in Verdi's Macbeth, and then in the next year won the 1998 Caruso Competition, named after the subject of the film that originally inspired him: The Great Caruso. The tenor quickly became an in-demand performer of Romantic Italian and French opera. In 2003 he signed with Decca, releasing his third album of opera excerpts, entitled The Maltese Tenor, in 2011. © Patsy Morita, Rovi
