Renaud CapuçonRenaud Capuçon is one of the leading violinists of the young generation emerging at the turn of the 20th to 21st Centuries.

He became interested in violin at a young age; as a five-year-old, when he was asked what he would be when he was grown up, he answered, "I will be a skier in winter and a violinist in summer!"

After early childhood studies, he began work at the age of ten with the teacher Veda Reynolds, a descendent of the schools of Fritz Kreisler and Carl Flesch. At the age of thirteen he won gold medals in violin and chamber music from the Conservatories of Chambéry and Annecy.

He entered the Paris Conservatory at the age of fourteen. He attended the chamber music class of Bruno Pasquier, and won First Prizes in chamber music in 1992 and in violin in 1993; the latter was with special mention by the jury. He had already won a First Prize at the Vichy International Competition for Young Virtuosos in 1991.

However, he decided to transfer his violin studies to private lessons with Thomas Brandis, the first violin of the Berlin Philharmonic. With Brandis he reworked his entire repertory, "progressing to the center of the music". When he joined the European Community Youth Orchestra in 1992, playing under the leadership of such conductors as Carlo Maria Giulini, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Vladimir Ashkenazy, he took a desk in the back of the second violin section. This study in the heart of an orchestra he credits with enriching his solo career. He also attended the master classes of Augustin Dumay, Régis Pasquier, Pierre Amoyal, and was a major participant in the 1996 Festival de la Ravoire in Savoy.

Capuçon began his solo career playing the Johannes Brahms and Alban Berg violin concertos. In 1997 the composer Nicolas Bacri dedicated his Sonata for Violin Solo to Capuçon.
