Alexander Mekaev was born in St. Petersburg in 1960, and began his music studies at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he graduated in 1978. He then enrolled at the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied piano with Stanislav Neuhaus and Eugeni Malinin and composition with Tikhon Hrennickov; he graduated there in 1983.
Mr. Mekaev has been active as a composer and pianist, as well as professor of music. From 1986 to 1988 he taught at the Ashgabat Conservatory in Turkmenistan; then from 1988 to 1996 he taught at the Moscow Pedagogical Institute. Today he is a Professor of Music at the Uludag University in Bursa, Turkey.
Mr. Mekaev is the composer of numerous orchestral and chamber works - the latter of which are much featured here at the Classical Archives.
