Berry was educated at the University of Southern California and at the Paris Conservatoire. His vocal orchestral =Spoon River= (1952) gained him national recognition. He taught at the University of Michigan since 1956 and was named head of the music theory department in 1968. He served as head of the University of British Columbia's music department from 1978 to 1984, then continued to teach theory, helping to found the Society for Music Theory.
