Alexey Goroholinsky was born in 1984. He began formal training on the piano at age 4, switching to the clarinet at age 7. From that time until age 13, he studied in the Special Central Music School in Moscow. His first clarinet teacher was V.Sokolov with whom he studied until 1999. After that, Alexey came to Idyllwild Arts Academy where he studied with Y.Gilad. In 2000, he won the Jack Smith Award at the Pasadena Instrumental Competition. In 2001, he won Second Prize at the Spotlight Competition. In December 2001, he performed a piece by John Adams "Gnarly Buttons", with Idyllwild Arts Orchestra and conductor R.Willson.
