Cadence Chamber Duo
|
The husband and wife team of accordionist Ivan Yergiyev and violinist Olena Yergiyeva formed the Cadence Chamber Duo in 1994. Both are active instructors in their native Odessa, Ukraine - he at the Odessa Music Academy, she at the Odessa Music School. Ivan was made an Honored Artist of Ukraine in 2002 and regularly publishes scholarly articles on accordion musical practice. Olena is also the principal violinist in the Odessa Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra.
The Duo has already garnered several prestigious awards in such chamber competitions as the Melody for Two Hearts Competition in Kiev (1st Prize, 2000), Vogttlandishcer Musikwettbeverbe (1st Prize, 1999) and the Citta di Castelfidadardo Competition (2nd prize, 1999). In addition, Ivan has won several competitions as a solo accordionist, including the Grand Prix at the Orpheus Prize Competition (Antwerp, 1995), and in general is considered a pioneer of modern Ukrainian accordion playing. The Duo has appeared in numerous international chamber festivals, such as the Kiev Music Fest (1996, 2003), Shostakovich and His Time (Gent, 1996), the XV International Festival of Accordion Music (St. Petersburg, 1999), and the Silk Road Festival for Music of our Time (Kyrgyzstan, 2001). In all their performances, the Duo combines their love of the standard classical repertory, particularly Baroque composers, with contemporary works - especially of composers of Ukraine, Russia, or other former Soviet satellites. Indeed, the Duo has performed more than thirty world premiers, many written specifically for them. Another specialty of Cadence, not surprising given their instrumentation, is the Tango repertory, especially that of Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla.
