ILYA HOFFMAN, Viola

Ilya Hoffman was born in Moscow in 1977 and began his viola studies at the Gnessin Music School under Professor Elena Ozol. He then entered the Moscow State Conservatory, where he studied under Professors Yuri Bashmet and Roman Balashov. Ilya is currently a post-graduate student at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, once more studying under Yuri Bashmet. Ilya likewise has studied composition under his father Leonid Hoffman - whose own teacher Philip Hershkowitz was a pupil of both Alban Berg and Anton Webern. Thus far, Ilya has won several awards, including being a laureate at the Vienna International Music Competition (2005) and Yuri Bashmet International Viola Competition (Russia, 2000), as well as winning the Solti Foundation Award (UK, 2005), First Prize at the Gaetano Zinetti International Chamber Music Competition (Italy, 2004), and Special Prize at the Leonel Tertis International Viola Competition (England, 2003). Ilya has participated in numerous music festivals, such as the Moscow Autumn Festival, the Oleg Kagan Memorial Festival, the World Viola Festival, and the Mozartiana Festival in London. Further, he has organized several such festivals, such as the September 11 Memorial Concert "An Evening of American Music" held at the Grand Hall of the Moscow State Conservatory (co-sponsored by the US Embassy), the festival honoring the 50th Anniversary of the death of Arnold Schoenberg, and others. Among his musical collaborators include such well-known performers as Alexei Lubimov, Natalia Gutman, Alexei Utkin - all likewise featured here at the Classical Archives; as well as Kolya Blaher, Edward Brunner, Alexander Rudin, Adrian Brendel, and others. He regularly performs in a duo with pianist Sergey Koudirakov. In 2004, this duo recorded a CD of the music of Schubert, Schumann, and Shostakovich - all of which is featured here at the Classical Archives.
