Dmitry Kalinin
Dmitry Kalinin

Dmitry Kalinin was born in Moscow in 1978 and began to play the balalaika at the age of seven; he is now among the most well-known balalaika performers in all of Russia. He began his studies at the Gnessin Music Academy with Professor V.Boldyrev, and graduated there with honors in 2003.

While still a student, in 1997, Dmitry became a soloist with the Academic Orchestra of Russian Folk Instruments of the Russian State TV and Radio Broadcasting Company under conductor N. Nekrasov, with whom he recorded several performances on the "Culture" channel. He likewise performs as a soloist with Ossipov's Balalaika Orchestra of Russia under conductor N. Kalinin, the Moscow Folk Orchestra under conductor I. Gromov, V. Petrov's Orchestra of the Gnessin Academy, and others.

Dmitry has performed in some of the best concert halls in Russia and abroad, including the Bolshoi Theater, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, the Santory-Hall in Tokyo, and others. His balalaika performances have likewise been featured in numerous Russian films, including "The Siberian Barber", "The Tender Age", "Under the Polar Star", "Collective Farm", and many others.

Since 2002, Dmitry has worked with the pianist - and fellow Classical Archives Featured Artist - Filipp Subbotin, in the "Russian Duet", several recordings of which are featured here. In addition, a number of works have been written expressly for Dmitry, including the balalaika concertos of Biktashev and Levin featured here.
