Mikhail Kokzhayev

Mikhail Kokzhayev was born in Baku, Azerbaijan in 1946, and graduated from the Baku Conservatory in 1971, studying with Djavdet Gadgiev. Following graduation, he studied in Moscow with Juri Fortunatov (1978-82). In 1988, he was forced to flee from Azerbaijan to Armenia, where he has taught counterpoint and harmony at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory since 1989, becoming a professor there in 1997. Mikhail is the father of Artem Kokzhayev, whose music is likewise featured at the Classical Archives.

The elder Kokzhayev is a prolific composer of symphonic (including six symphonies), chamber, and vocal works, as well as jazz- and blues-inspired works. He was a member of the Soviet Composers' Union from 1976 until the breakup of the USSR; he has since become a member of the Armenian Composers' Union, serving in its administration board since 1994. Among his awards include First Prize in the Aram Khachaturian Competition for his Cello Concerto (1993). In his works and research, Kokzhayev is very interested in aesthetic issues for composers - including the adequacy of compositional devices, artistic sense, and the problems of musical space. He has published several articles on these topics. He himself frequently experiments with compositional techniques, such as the "assemblage" technique employed in the Symphony of Sadness 1 - the precursor of the Symphony of Sadness 2, featured here at the Classical Archives.
