Pierre-Dominique Ponnelle

Founded in 1930, the Minsk State Philharmonic's repertoire includes not only the important works of the Classical and Romantic period, but also compositions by contemporary Russian composers and, in collaboration with the Philharmonic Chorus, the great works of the choral literature.

Internationally renowned soloists who have appeared with the orchestra include Emil Gilels, Sviatoslav Richter, David Oistrach, Natalia Gutman, Leonid Kogan, and Mstislav Rostropovich. Before Pierre-Dominique Ponnelle became the orchestra's Principal Conductor, Yuri Yefimov and Victor Dubrovsky were the orchestra's long-time Principal Conductors.

Pierre-Dominique Ponnelle, Conductor - Born in 1957 in Munich, Pierre-Dominique Ponnelle studied at the Munich Musikhochschule and the Richard Strauss Conservatory. He also worked with Otmar Suitner in Weimar and Herbert von Karajan in Salzburg and Berlin.

He has conducted in the opera houses of Kassel, Innsbruck, Marseille, Nice, Zurich, Bratislava, Kosice, Tashkent, Lvov, and Odessa. Ponnelle has also appeared as guest conductor of such ensembles as the Radio Symphony Orchestras of Baden-Baden, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Leipzig, Bucharest, and Luxembourg; the Symphony Orchestras of Essen, Berlin, Wuppertal, São Paulo, Valencia; the Philharmonica Hungarica, the George Enescu Philharmonia in Bucharest, Pacific Symphony Orchestra of Vladivostok; the State Symphony Orchestras of Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Greece, Slovenia, Moldavia, Lithuania, and the Ukraine; and the Philharmonics of Zagreb, Ostravia, Strasbourg, Monte Carlo, Dresden, Irkutsk, Munich, Wroclaw, Krakow, Kharkov, Jalta, Czernowitz, Dnepropetrovsk, Novosibirsk, and St. Petersburg.

Ponnelle has conducted at the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto and Charleston (USA), and at the International Music Festival in Bratislava.

He has worked with the Minsk State Philharmonic since 1992, first as Principal Guest Conductor, and then as Chief Conductor. Under his direction, the orchestra has made numerous tours, television appearances, and CDs.
