Michel Sogny
Michel Sogny

Michel Sogny is a composer, pianist, author, and pedagogue. He has developed a unique theory and approach to music pedagogy, emphasizing the psychological and creative aspects of music-making, aimed at increasing musical accessibility to all. As a complement to his musical studies, Dr. Sogny holds a Masters Degree in psychology and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the Sorbonne. He combines these interests to create his own "musical eidetic" wherein his students set out to seek their own identities through musical study, leading them toward inner balance and personal evolution.

Dr. Sogny pursued his musical studies at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris. His doctorate work was completed under the supervision of Professor Vladimir Jankélévitch in 1972. That same year Dr. Sogny founded the Association Française Franz Liszt, and in 1975 wrote an extended essay on the psychology of Liszt's creative process, "L'admiration créatrice chez Liszt." The fruits borne from these studies enabled Dr. Sogny to develop his unique pedagogy, which has now aided thousands of students in France and the United States. Dr. Sogny formed a school in Paris, whose success has led to numerous accolades and awards, as well as media attention. Among the awards signaling his success include the United Nations Peace Medal in 1986, an honorary diploma from UNESCO in 1994, and the adoption of his teaching methods by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva in 1985. He is currently the Artistic Director of the Villa Schindler in Austria. Among his students there is pianist Elisso Bolkvadze, likewise featured here at the Classical Archives; moreover, Maestros Sogny and Bolkvadze have begun recording works for piano 4-hands, including original transcriptions by F.Liszt, found here and on Elisso Bolkvadze's page.

More recent activities of Dr. Sogny include the founding of the SOS Talents Foundation, which assumes the cost of studies for young talented pianists in St. Petersburg, the Republic of Georgia, and Switerland.

Among his compositions are those recorded for L'espace Cardin in Paris, featured here at the Classical Archives. More information about his teaching method can be found through Michel Sogny's website.

Reviews

"I attended a lesson and heard Chopin's Preludes played by pupils who had been studying piano for five, six, and eighteen months, respectively. That was enough to convince the most inflexible among the doubting Thomases."
Le Figaro Magazine

"The Solfège method in record time... Michel Sogny is not only a unique professor of piano, he is a creator."
France Soir
