Vesna Children's Choir
Vesna Children's Choir

The Vesna Children's Choir was formed by Alexander Ponomarev in 1965, while the conductor was still a student at the Moscow Conservatory. Originally, all the children stemmed from the same Moscow neighborhood, though it gradually expanded to form a children's singing and music school. Today the school has about three hundred pupils with ages ranging from five to fifteen, all of whom study choral singing, piano, music theory, and music history. These classes are held in the afternoon to enable the children to receive a more general education at a "traditional" school in the morning.

The children are divided into five choirs by age. The oldest, those between 10 and 15 years old, sing in the concert choir, and its 80 members work with well-known orchestras and conductors, give concerts in Moscow, go on tour in Russia and abroad, and make recordings for radio, television, and CD--mainly for the French label, Opus 111.

Outside Russia, Vesna has performed in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, and Japan. It has earned numerous awards in international competitions, notable among which are Second Prize in Nantes, France in 1991; two First Prizes in 1992--one in Debrecen, Hungary, the other in Arezzo, Italy; Second Prize in Tolosa, Spain in 1993, and First Prize in Nantes in 1995.

In March 2000, the school celebrated its 35th birthday. Over this period, Vesna has mastered about a hundred works from the greatest possible variety of periods, countries, and musical styles. Special attention is paid to contemporary repertoire, and many works have been especially written for and dedicated to Vesna. Among them are several choral works and children's operas by Ukranian composer Efrem Podgaits, who has his own page on the Classical Archives.
