Benjamin began composing at the age of nine. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Messian and at Cambridge with Goehr. His orchestral piece =Ringed by the Flat Horizen= (1980) brought him early recognition. His reputation has grown with his continuing efforts, including =A Mind of Winter= (1981) for soprano and small orchestra and =At First= (1982), a piece for chamber ensemble. © Lynn Vought, All Music Guide
