Jeanne Baxtresser Noted for her "absolute perfection .. refined style...and a ravishing sonority" this remarkable flutist has held the position of principal flute with the New York Philharmonic for 15 years. She also continues to pursue a career as concert soloist, chamber player, recording artist, author, and teacher. At the age of 14, she made her professional debut with the Minnesota Orchestra. Baxtresser attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York, where she studied with Julius Baker and graduated with honors. Thereafter, she was hired as principal flutist for the Montreal Symphony, and then went on to serve as solo flutist with the Toronto Symphony. At the invitation of director Zubin Mehta, she joined the New York Philharmonic. Baxtresser has performed more than 50 times as a soloist with that orchestra. She has served on the faculties of the Juilliard School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music. She is the Vira I. Heinz professor of flute at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and is a faculty member of the New England Conservatory in Boston. Baxtresser also conducts master classes worldwide. As an author, Baxtresser has published Orchestral Excerpts for Flute with Piano Accompaniment, Duet From Lakmé for two flutes and piano, and The Greatest Flute Duos From the Orchestral Literature. Her instructive recorded album Orchestral Excerpts for Flute contains a valuable spoken commentary.
