Barroso Neto studied piano at an early age and received his higher education at the Instituto Nacional de Música. He later took a position there as professor of piano and became one of Brazil's most distinguished piano teachers. In the early 1920s he became the director of the Sociedade de Cultura Musical. His interest in choral music resulted in his founding of the Barroso Neto Choir in 1936. His compositions are romantic in style, and some of his instrumental works call for considerable virtuosity. He wrote only piano music (including several educational works), solo songs and choral music. His most popular songs are "Canção da felicidade," "Adeus," "Olhos tristes." and "Felicidade."
