Andreyev played a large part in revising the designs of the balalaika, domra, and gusli. In 1886, he founded an orchestra of Russian instruments in St. Petersburg and toured much of Russia, Europe, and North America with the orchestra. His involvement with these instruments served to bring them to the attention of Russian composers, resulting in their use in such works as Rimsky-Korsakov's opera Sadko. He also introduced the instruments into use in schools and in the Russian army. He arranged folk songs for his orchestra and created many original compositions for the balalaika. Andreyev wrote a textbook about the balalaika as well as articles concerning Russian instruments and folk music.
