David Balasanyan was born in Yerevan, Armenia in 1983, and studied piano and composition with Ashot Ghazaryan at the local Mkhitar Sebastatsi Music School; he then pursued piano studies with Avetiq Pivazyan and continued composition lessons with Professor Ghazaryan at the Romanos Melikyan Music College in Yerevan (1998-2000). In 2000, he entered the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory, where he studied composition with Ashot Zohrabyan. Since graduating in 2005, David has been pursuing post-graduate work at the Conservatory, where he is currently completing his thesis with Professor Mher Navoyan.
Among the awards won by David thus far include 2nd Prize at the Benjamin Britten Chamber Music Competition (Yerevan, 2003) and the Naregatsi Young Composers Award (Yerevan, 2006) for his "Postlude in Memoriam", which is featured here at the Classical Archives. David's music has been performed not only in Armenia, but likewise in Europe and Asia. He is the co-founder of the Young Composers' Club at the Armenian Composers Union, and has served as its co-director since 2006.
