Atkins studied at Truro and Hereford and served as the organist at Worcester Cathedral until 1950. He directed the Worcester Three Choirs Festivals for 50 years, and although he was not a gifted conductor, he was effective in broadening the repertoire of the festivals. He worked closely with the composer Elgar to produce English editions of the works of Bach and other musicians.
