Dmitri Melnikov was born in 1982 in Lugansk, Ukraine, and began studying piano and composition at an early age. In 1995, Dmitri and his family moved to Norilsk in Northern Russia; there he enrolled in the Norilsk Music School and later the Norilsk Music College, where he studied piano under Leontinne Kartashova. Upon graduating in 2000, he attended Master Classes with pianists Alexander Bonduriansky and Valery Kastelsky - with whom he later studied privately. From 2000-2001, Dmitri took part in a concert tour organized by the "New Names" Foundation in Russia. He is currently a student at the Gnessin Music Academy in Moscow, studying under Vera Nosina.
Dmitri has already won several competitions, including the Grand Prix at the Vorsel/Kiev International Music Competition (2004) and First Prize at the International Music Competition in Vienna (2004). He gives regular recitals in Russia, and claims a broad repertory, including works by Couperin, Bach, Scarlatti, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninov, and others - all featured here at the Classical Archives.
