Catalan composer Ricard Lamote de Grignón i Ribas was the only son of eminent composer and conductor Joan Lamote de Grignon i Bocquet. After studying with his father, Lamote de Grignón continued his education at the Academia Marshall and Conservatorio del Liceo in Barcelona. Working with orchestras in his native Barcelona as a cellist, Lamote de Grignón began his composing career around 1920 and ultimately worked as an assistant conductor to his father. Ricard Lamote de Grignón's only post as principal conductor was with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Girona, which he led from 1930-32; he was to assume the directorship of the Banda Municipal de Barcelona, but the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War sent father and son fleeing to Valencia, where the elder Lamote de Grignon founded the local municipal orchestra and Ricard worked, again, as assistant conductor. Returning to Barcelona in January 1939 to pick up the Granados Award for his Quatre petites pastorales recorded here, Ricard Lamote de Grignon arrived just as the Falangists entered to take over Barcelona and wound up being thrown in jail for a lengthy stay. The experience marked him deeply and impacted his physical well-being; by 1950, however, Lamote de Grignon found work scoring for Spanish films and, in the last five years of his life, was named to the post of assistant conductor to the Barcelona Municipal Orchestra, along with his good friend Eduard Toldrá.
Ricard Lamote de Grignón i Ribas was reasonably prolific as a composer; he composed at least three operas, the Sinfonia Catalana (1950), Concierto Mágico (1953) which was based on one of his film scores and the Divertimento for symphonic jazz orchestra (1936) in addition to numerous symphonic poems, music for chorus, piano pieces and songs.
