Aurelio de la Vega studied with Fritz Kramer in Havana (1943 - 1946) and with Ernst Toch in Los Angeles (1947 - 1948). He served as dean to the School of Music at the University of Oriente, executive advisor at the National Institute of Culture (Cuba), vice president of the Havana Philharmonic Orchestra, and president of the Cuban Section of the I.S.C.M. Vega received the Outstanding Professor Award from the California University system and many awards and grants. He served as a lecturer and essayist on contemporary music and his early works, including The Infinite Foundation, are post-impressionist, Elegy for String Orchestra (1954) is freely chromatic, and his String Quartet is serialist. Graph scores of '70s include Olep ed Arudamot, The Infinite Square, Astralis, and The Magic Labyrinth. Other works include Undici Colori for solo bassoon and projections of abstract drawings (1981); Inflorescencia for soprano, bass clarinet, and tape (1976); and Magias e Invenciones (1986), a song cycle for soprano and piano.
