David Maves was born in 1937 in Salem, OR. He attended the University of Oregon where he studied composition with Homer Keller. Later, in the graduate school at the University of Michigan he was a student of Ross Lee Finney and Leslie Bassett. With more than 100 compositions to his credit he has been the recipient of many awards and grants including Ford Foundation and ASCAP. He resides in Charleston, SC, and has been for many years one of the directors of the Spoleto and Piccolo Spoleto Festival. Among his compositions is an opera based on Lorca's Blood Wedding, ballet music, and much chamber music. Recorded examples from his category include his Musiciens de St. Merry, a detailed and intelligent setting of a poem by Guillaine Appolinaire still available on vinyl from OPUS One (#128) (Box 604, Greenville, ME 04441), who also released his first and second piano sonatas (#97) performed by the famous Max Lifschitz. These have been re-released on CD by North/South Recordings (Box 5081, Albany, NY 12205-0081) as CD #1008. This release includes the third and fourth sonatas. The first sonata is a work of considerable scale; a hugely structured set of variations considered by some to be perhaps Maves' greatest keyboard work. Such judgment could conceivably wait for commercial recordings of his astonishing Two-Piano Concerto and very powerful Organ Concerto.
