Composer
Peter Scott Lewis; USA

Peter Scott Lewis composes in a variety of genres, from concerto to chamber music to vocal music. Often his work, such as the song cycle Where the Heart Is Pure and the cello concerto Through the Mountain, is descriptive and evocative of the environment in which he grew up and where he lives: northern California and Washington state. The poetic nature of his music belies its formality, although it can often also sound improvisatory. Lewis studied with composers such as Andrew Imbrie, Jacob Druckman, Nicholas Maw, and Morton Subotnick. He has performed as a guitarist, with Alirio Diaz and Carlos Barbosa-Lima as his teachers on that instrument. Lewis' music has been commissioned and performed by conductors Kent Nagano and Alan Gilbert, guitarist David Tanenbaum, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and many others. His works have been recorded on the New Albion label, as well as his own label, Lapis Island.
