Sona Hovhannisyan
The Hover Chamber Choir was founded in Yerevan in 1992 by Sona Hovhannisyan and other students at the Yerevan State Komitas Conservatory with the principal aim of promoting the wealth of Armenian music past and present to the wider world. The word "hover" means "wind", and refers to the spirit and primordial energy that flows, for example, through the folk songs of Komitas. Their successful championing of Armenia's often secretive vocal music has led to several awards and recognitions, including diplomas at the International Polyphonic Music Festival (Arezzo, Italy, 1997) and the International Competition in Tours, France (2000), as well as a Gold Medal at the International Choir Olympiad in Linz, Austria (2000). The Choir has appeared in numerous concerts in Armenia and beyond, including in Great Britain (with the London Sinfonietta), France, Italy, Austria, and Russia. Beyond their focus on the music of Komitas - such as that found here at the Classical Archives, the Hover Chamber Choir has performed premiers of several contemporary Armenian works. We are pleased to feature this distinguished vocal group here at the Classical Archives.
