This is the third of the canzonas in Froberger's Libro secondo of 1649. Froberger's canzoni are sectional contrapuntal works that tend to have a lively rhythmic content. This canzona, like most of Froberger's other canzoni, is in three sections. The second and third sections each end with the contrapuntal material breaking down into free rhapsodic toccata-like passagework. All three sections utilize subjects for imitation that are thematically related, however, the relationship between them is not as explicit as in some other Froberger canzoni. The last section is particularly interesting because it begins with tight stretto imitation with the imitating voice entering after only a quarter-note duration.
