Musicology:
This is the fourth and one of the largest of the canzoni in Froberger's Libro secondo of 1649. The canzoni written by Froberger are imitative contrapuntal works with rhythmically active subjects. Like many of Froberger's other canzoni this one consists of three sections. The subjects of each of the three sections are all thematically related, each with some sort of rhythmic variation. The first section is in common time; midway through the section Froberger adds a countersubject which also appears from time to time in inversion. The second section is in triple meter and from the outset includes a countersubject. The third section is much like a gigue and ends with a flurry of toccata-like free passage work. -
