Musicology:
This is the sixth and final canzona in Froberger's Libro secondo of 1649, a book of Froberger's keyboard music presented to Emperor Ferdinand III of the Hapsburg Empire. The book consists of toccatas, fantasias, canzonas, and suites with six examples of each genre type. The canzona was an imitative genre with rhythmically active subjects. Froberger's canzoni tend to be in three sections each with thematically related subjects of imitation. The three sections of this canzona each use essentially the same subject, only each is organized with a different rhythmic pattern. The first section is in common time, the second in 12/8, and the third is again in common time. The last section features stretto imitation from the outset after only a quarter note duration. -
