Musicology:
This is the fifth of the six fantasias in the Libro secondo of 1649. This book contained a collection of keyboard works by Froberger organized by genre with six toccatas, six fantasias, six canzonas, and six suites. This fantasia is in four sections. The first two are in common time, the third, in triple meter, and the last in 6/4. This progression of metric organization creates an acceleration over the course of the work. A single theme appears as the primary subject of imitation in each of the four sections, with different material appearing as countersubjects in each section. The countersubjects in the second and third sections play an important enough role that they could be seen as full-fledged subjects in double counterpoint imitation. -
