Musicology:
This is the first of Froberger's toccatas in the Libro Secondo of 1649. The work is in five sections alternating free rhapsodic passagework with imitative fugal sections. The two fugal sections are thematically related, both playing with arpeggiations of the A minor triad. The free rhapsodic passagework is somewhat reminiscent of Frescobaldi, an Italian composer with whom Froberger studied in the late 1630s. Froberger's toccatas appear to have received a fair amount of attention outside of the Austrian court where Froberger was working when he wrote these pieces. Buxtehude's praeludia all use the same basic organization involving the alternation of free passagework with fugal sections. Also Louis Couperin integrated fugal sections into many of his preludes so that they work much like a Froberger toccata. One of Couperin's unmeasured preludes, entitled Prelude de Mr. Couperin alimitation de Mr. Froberger en a mi la, points out that this particular toccata in A minor is being imitated. It begins with the same first two measures and likewise alternates sections of free material with imitative material. -
