Musicology:
This is the second of the six toccatas found in his Libro Secondo of 1649. The book contains six toccatas, fantasies, canzonas, and suites. This toccata is in five sections alternating sections of free spontaneous-sounding passagework with imitative fugal material. The first fugue is in common time while the second is in 12/8. Though they are quite different rhythmically, both fugues are double fugues and both employ a descending half-step, chromatic countersubject. In the first fugue the chromatic countersubject appears also in inversion. -
