Musicology:
This toccata is the third of the six toccatas found in Froberger's Libro secondo of 1649. As is almost always the case in the toccatas of Froberger, this piece is in five sections with sections of free-wheeling passage work alternating with imitative sections. Often in five section toccatas like this one, the second imitative section is in a triple meter of some sort; however, in this toccata, Froberger stays in common time from start to finish. Both imitative sections are built on themes so short that they appear much more like motives than full-fledged fugue subjects. -
