Musicology:
This is the second of the six toccatas in Froberger's Libro Quarto of 1656. This toccata begins with a particularly long section of free rhapsodic material with all of the flights of fancy associated with the stylus fantasticus. This long sections of free material is followed by two imitative contrapuntal sections each separated by a brief free section. The section consists of five block chords written in half notes which may have been used as a skeleton for improvisation. The two imitative sections are somewhat interesting. While Froberger often uses some kind of thematic link between each subject in his toccatas, these two sections use unrelated thematic material. The first of the two imitative sections begins with stretto-style imitation at only a quarter-note distance. -
