Musicology:
The last in Corelli's Op. 12 series of concerti grossi officially adheres to the chamber concerto format, which incorporates dance movements, yet only two of the five movements here are dances. As usual, the work begins with a small-scale Preludio (Adagio), introduced by the concertino group and proceeding through a dialog between the soli and the tutti. The ensuing Allegro sends the solo first violin into a flurry of rapid figurations, a typical Corelli touch. The central, minor-mode Adagio features continuous eighth-note motion and cleanses the palate in preparation for an unusual Sarabanda; it's most often a slow dance, but this one is marked Vivace. The concluding movement is a quick Gigue. -
