Musicology (work in progress):
Lolita: Serenata Spagnuola is easily the most popular and widely recorded composition of Arturo Buzzi-Peccia, a prominent New York voice teacher whose best-known pupil was Alma Gluck. It combines the robust vocalism of Buzzi-Peccia's Italian heritage with the familiar guitar rhythms and modal inflections that have become clichés of Spanish music, resulting in a character very much like Tchaikovsky's Don Juan Serenade. The text (most likely by Buzzi-Peccia himself) is exactly what you would expect in this genre, boiling down to a single sentiment of desire: "I'm miserable without you, and I'll die if you don't come and kiss me." -
