Musicology:
The serenade played a major part among Mozart's works composed in Salzburg. Synonymous with the titles divertimento and cassation, works of this kind were composed for open-air performances during the summer months, often designed to accompany a specific event, such as a wedding. One occasion in Salzburg that called for pieces of this nature took place in early August, when students from the university celebrated the transition to the second stage of their education. Both the Cassation in G and its companion in B Flat, K100, may well have formed part of these ceremonies in 1769. Typically such works opened with a march which was repeated at the end, as is the case with both K63 and K100, with six or seven intervening movements. The scoring of both K63 and K100 is the standard instrumentation for the time - pairs of oboes and horns plus the usual strings. -
