Glinka's Someniye (Doubt) comes from 1838, following the completion of A Life for the Czar, his first opera, and preceding the start of Ruslan and Lyudmila, his second opera. Along with V krovi gorit' ogon zhelan'ya (The Fire of Yearning), it was the only vocal work he composed that year. Someniye is a less distinctive work, a mournfully minor-keyed strophic song with a melody that is more labored than lovelorn, harmonies more pathetic than affecting, and a form more conventionally operatic than soulfully Russian.
