Musicology:
It is fair to observe that Johann Strauss II composed this attractive waltz at a relatively early point in his career since, for example, it predates all 17 of his operettas. Yet when looking at his works list, which contains over 500 compositions—many without an opus number—it appears at about the midpoint. Moreover, it hardly sounds like an early or immature piece and it is certainly one of his larger waltzes, both in scope and in its ten-minute length. After a brief, fanfare-like introduction, Strauss introduces a catchy, light waltz theme that has the grace and Viennese flavors of his better waltz melodies. The music is playful and carefree and its secondary material carries on with the bright mood and sense of festivity. The middle section features a colorful theme related to earlier material, and which yields thematic offshoots of its own that exhibit jaunty character and much vigor. After re-appearances of other key thematic elements, the main theme returns and this attractive waltz ends with splashes of color and festivity from the composer's reliably deft instrumentation. -
