It is nearly impossible to catalogue Rossini's numerous settings of this text by Pietro Metastasio; he returned to it time and time again for the composition of album leaves and for more substantial song settings. Six settings form the bulk of Musique Anodine, the 13th volume of the Péchés de Vieillesse, and several have become known under unique titles, such as Il rimprovero from Soirées Musicales. However, some of them remain unpublished, and the rest remain essentially undistinguishable without reference to scores or manuscripts. -
